“Season of Sharing” Makes Dreams Come True for Community

During the holidays and all year long, Walt Disney World Resort works in tandem with charities throughout Central Florida to spread magic throughout the community. Dozens of charitable activities are currently underway at Walt Disney World Resort as part of the “Season of Sharing.” From feeding the homeless to creating costumes for teddy bears, all of these efforts focus on improving the lives of children and their families. Cast Members Collect More Than 26,000 Toys for Local Children

On a mission to make the holidays brighter for local children, Disney VoluntEARS delivered more than 26,000 brand new toys to the Central Florida Toys for Tots headquarters this week. Cast members have spent the past few weeks playing the role of Santa’s helpers by collecting tons of new toys as part of Walt Disney World Resort’s annual effort to support the campaign. “We are so grateful to Disney for their generous support of Toys for Tots,” said First Sgt. Michael Diaz, who heads up the 2010 Central Florida Toys for Tots campaign. “Their donations will make holiday dreams come true for thousands of local kids.” Click here to see a video and photos.

Disney Dresses 2,000 Teddy Bears for Salvation Army

More than 1,200 Disney cast members have spent the past few months crafting one-of-a-kind outfits for 2,000 teddy bears as part of the Salvation Army of Central Florida’s Dress-A-Bear program. The donations will warm the hearts of hundreds of local children, who will receive the unique bears as holiday gifts. As one might expect, Walt Disney World Costuming cast members create some of the most incredible pieces. “It’s a creative outlet for cast members and it provides something special for children,” said Janice Jones, a Walt Disney World costumer who has been coordinating the Dress-A-Bear efforts for 14 years in her work area. Hundreds of Local Families Benefit from Feed-A-Family Donations

Helping feed families in need, hundreds of Disney cast members have spent the past month filling blue canvas bags full of non-perishable food items in support of the Christian Service Center’s Feed-A-Family program. From cans of green beans to boxes of instant potatoes, the donations aim to create holiday meals for those who need it most. Click here to learn more.

Second Harvest of Central Florida Receives $30K Gift for Kids Café

Prior to a special performance of the Candlelight Processional at Epcot on December 5, Walt Disney World Resort President Meg Crofton surprised Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida with a gift of $30,000 to benefit the charity’s Kids Café. Disney has been a long-standing supporter of the program, which daily feeds an average of 910 local children. “These funds will go a long way in making it possible to provide 160,000 meals this year,” said Second Harvest of Central Florida Executive Director Dave Krepcho. “Kids Café meals provide critical nutrition that would not otherwise be possible for children in need.” Click here to learn more.

Local Children Take Center Stage with Support from Disney

More than 200 Central Florida kids recently joined multiple professional dance troops to perform a modern interpretation of a holiday classic. With support from Walt Disney World Resort, The Chocolate Nutcracker staged three shows this past weekend at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. The multicultural re-imagining of Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet features a variety of music and dance styles ranging from jazz to hip hop. Besides being great entertainment, the show gives local kids an opportunity to learn choreography inspired by American and global dance styles and experience the rigors and excitement of performance.

Disney Soaps Help Local Organization Combat Cholera in Haiti

Did you know that soaps and shampoos from Walt Disney World Resort hotels have a second life after their initial use by guests? Disney VoluntEARS work with Clean the World, an Orlando-based nonprofit, to collect, sanitize and repackage discarded amenities from the nearly 28,000 hotel rooms on Disney property so they may be distributed to people in need worldwide. More than 300,000 bars of sanitized soaps from Disney Resorts have been handed out by Clean the World in Haiti to aid in efforts to contain the cholera outbreak. Read more here.

2011 Disney Grants Available for Eligible Local Non-Profits

As the new year approaches, financial support is available for charities that share Disney’s commitment to inspiring and improving the lives of local children. Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants applications are being accepted now through January 31, 2011. Eligible non-profit organizations in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Polk and Lake Counties are encouraged to apply. “Walt Disney World Resort is always looking for ways to invest in community partners that are devoted to helping children thrive,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of Community Relations for Walt Disney World Resort. In May 2010, Walt Disney World Resort gave a total of $1.2 million in grants to 57 local non-profit organizations and school districts. Click here for more information and applications.

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort to Create 1,550 New Jobs

Already in the land clearing stage, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is expected to create up to 800 construction jobs and 750 permanent jobs in Central Florida. Disney’s Art of Animation Resort will feature themed buildings and rooms that bring to life The Lion King, Cars, Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid. Located adjacent to Disney’s Pop Century Resort, the new resort will include 1,120 family suites and 864 themed rooms. Read more here.

Disney Cruise Line Takes Helm of Newest Ship

Disney Cruise Line took possession of its newest ship – Disney Dream – from the Meyer Werft shipyard in a traditional maritime ceremony aboard the ship in Bremerhaven, Germany on December 9. The Meyer Werft flag was lowered, while the Disney Cruise Line flag was raised, transferring ownership from the shipbuilder to Disney. The milestone closes the book on the ship’s construction journey, which began nearly two years ago in Papenburg, Germany, and signals its readiness to welcome guests on its maiden voyage, set for Jan. 26, 2011, from Port Canaveral.
